Düsseldorf / Bottrop, February 6, 2025 – After just one year of construction, Prologis and Yusen Logistics (Deutschland) GmbH today celebrated the opening of a modern logistics facility in Bottrop. Yusen Logistics is utilizing the new facility as the European central warehouse for Mitsubishi Electric. Once fully operational, the facility will create 200 jobs, becoming a key logistics hub in the region and contributing to the local economy.
“This strategic partnership with Prologis enables Yusen Logistics to provide the sustainable logistics solutions our customer needs,” said Bruno Jacques, Managing Director Yusen Logistics (Deutschland) GmbH & Yusen Logistics (Benelux) B.V. “The new logistics building will support Mitsubishi Electric with enhanced logistics efficiency, improved supply chain resilience, and progress toward their sustainability goals, all of which are critical to their operations and growth across Europe.”
Sustainability and Well-Being: A Holistic Approach
The Bottrop logistics facility exemplifies Prologis’ commitment to sustainable development. The logistics real estate company aims to achieve a Platinum certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) for the facility, which is the highest level of recognition for sustainable building practices in Germany. All of Prologis’ new developments in Germany are certified at least DGNB Gold.
“The Bottrop logistics facility demonstrates how energy-efficient construction and human-centered design can go hand in hand with economic viability and long-term value creation,” said Philipp Feige, Vice President, Head of Capital Deployment Germany at Prologis. “This project is an integral part of our commitment to developing sustainable logistics facilities that meet high standards and deliver value for our customers, communities, and investors.”
Key features of the facility include:
- Fully electric operations: The building operates without direct fossil fuels, thanks to advanced electric heat pumps that provide efficient heating and cooling.
- Green façade: The green façade cools the surrounding area, improves air quality, and enhances the building’s visual appeal.
- Water management: Rainwater harvesting systems and automated irrigation help reduce the consumption of water from the public supply network.
- Employee well-being: Increased natural light, fitness areas, and green recreation zones promote a healthy and attractive work environment.
Prologis Expands Solar Energy Capabilities
The Bottrop facility features a 3.6 MWp solar installation, the largest Prologis has implemented in Germany to date. Both Yusen Logistics and the local power grid benefit from the installation, with excess energy fed back into the grid to support the region. With 8,276 solar modules, the system generates enough electricity to power approximately 1,000 households annually, based on an average consumption of 3,400 kWh per household.
This effort aligns with Prologis’ global solar energy work. Currently, the company has 37 MWp of solar capacity installed across its German portfolio, with additional projects underway. The solar installation in Bottrop was delivered through the Prologis Essentials platform, which offers energy, operations, workforce and mobility solutions to customers.
Economic Boost Through Revitalization
The site on Braker Straße has long been an industrial area—first an open-pit mine, then, since the 1970s, home to a steel-producing company. In close collaboration with the City of Bottrop, a comprehensive soil management plan was developed. Additionally, the old steel plant infrastructure was dismantled.
Paul Höller, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action, and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia: “The logistics sector keeps North Rhine-Westphalia moving. With state-of-the-art logistics hubs, we are making transport and storage more efficient and sustainable, securing our position as a leading logistics location. In Bottrop, Prologis and Yusen Logistics have successfully transformed an old industrial site into an innovative logistics center for heat pumps. This is great news for the entire region and underscores that NRW offers attractive conditions and the space for forward-looking investments. Mitsubishi Electric’s commitment further highlights that our state remains a top location for Japanese businesses.“
